SSL Enrollment Step-by-Step

You can buy VeriSign SSL Certificates online and install them on your servers. You will need access to your Web server during the enrollment and installation process. Enrollment takes about 20 minutes to complete. The business authentication process could take as little as 2 hours or up to several days, depending on the verification information you provide.

The CSR is a string of text generated by your server software. You provide this string of text to VeriSign during the enrollment process. To generate a CSR, you will need to know what kind of server software is running on your Web server to choose the correct instructions.

Once you have determined which SSL service to purchase, you will need your CSR with the exact domain name of the site you intend to secure.

VeriSign must verify your enrollment information before you receive your installation instructions. This step takes anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on the documentation you provide during the enrollment process and your response to additional requests for information. You must respond to verification requests within 30 days to complete the enrollment process.

Installation Instructions >>
Once your information has been validated, VeriSign will email you a text file to install on your server. Choose the appropriate installation instructions for your server software and for your product. If you are installing a true 128-bit SSL Certificate with SGC, you will need to install an Intermediate CA certificate.

Step 4

Backup Certificate
Once your SSL Certificate is installed, you will not need to make any updates until renewal unless your information changes. VeriSign recommends purchasing 2-year SSL Certificates to reduce costs and save time. We also recommend that you back up your certificate to avoid a replacement fee.

The VeriSign Secured Seal should display within 2 hours of installation after your SSL Certificate has been validated. To check your seal:
  1. Open the updated pages in a Web browser.
  2. Make sure the seal appears as expected.
  3. Click the seal to check the verification page.
  4. Review the information to make sure it is correct.

If your seal does not display

  1. Make sure that the page with the seal is located within the domain secured by the common name.
  2. Your domain has not been verified. The VeriSign Secured Seal will not appear on a domain until your SSL Certificate has been approved and issued. Make sure your SSL Certificate had been authenticated and wait at least 24 hours before contacting VeriSign support.
  3. Your common name has not been added to the database. VeriSign must add your common name to the database the first time the seal is installed. In most cases your seal will be available for display within 2 hours. If this is the first time you've installed the seal using this common name, please allow up to 24 hours before contacting VeriSign Customer Support.
  4. The common names don't match. The common name must match the common name for the certificate exactly. For example, if the certificate's common name is www.verisign.com, enter the complete common name, including www. If the common name is just verisign.com, do not include www. Do not include http:// or https://.
  5. The pages are on a test server. The pages with the seal must be within the domain identified by the certificate's common name. Loading the pages on a different site (including a test server with a different domain name) will result in the seal not displaying correctly or other error.
  6. The script was corrupted. Emailing or opening the script in a word processing application can insert characters and formatting, corrupting the script. Return to the installation page and generate the script again. Copy the code from the seal installation page and paste it directly into your HTML.
  7. Other coding prevents the seal from displaying. Test the Web page's code to ensure that an image can appear. For example, insert any static GIF image where the seal should display. Open the page to confirm that the image appears.
  8. Contact VeriSign Customer Support. If these suggestions do not solve your problem and you've waited 24 hours, contact seal-support@verisign.com with the following information:
    • Your SSL Certificate Order Number or your Common Name
    • Code used for your seal
    • Link to a published destination page for your seal
